Where It All Began: Lily of the Valley

There are some flowers that feel less like decoration, and more like memory. Lily of the valley has always been that for us.

At Ode to Joy, it isn’t simply a seasonal favourite,  it’s part of our story. A thread that runs quietly through everything we do, from the way we design to the way we see the world.

A Childhood Rooted in the Woods

For our founder, Yana, lily of the valley was the first flower she truly loved. Growing up, it would appear each spring in the woods,  delicate clusters of white bells nestled low beneath the leaves. She would pick them by hand, small gathered stems held carefully, aware even then of how fleeting they were.

There’s something about that ritual that has stayed. The stillness of it. The sense of discovery. The understanding that beauty doesn’t need to be loud to be meaningful.

That early connection to the natural world continues to shape Ode to Joy today, always guided by the seasons, always led by what feels honest and considered.

A Flower Woven Into Life’s Moments

It felt only natural that lily of the valley would return again, years later, as part of Yana’s wedding day.

Chosen for her bridal bouquet, it carried with it all those early memories, but also its long-held symbolism: purity, renewal, and a quiet, enduring happiness.

It’s a flower with a rich history in bridal tradition, favoured for generations for its delicacy and meaning. Perhaps most notably, it featured in the bouquet of Kate Middleton, where its understated elegance brought a softness to the grandeur of the occasion.

There’s something about lily of the valley that feels inherently intimate,  never overpowering, always considered.

There is also the long-standing tradition of gifting it on the first of May, a gesture believed to bring luck and happiness for the year ahead. A small offering, but one filled with sentiment.

This is a flower that speaks softly, but says so much.

The Crest of Ode to Joy

When it came to shaping the identity of Ode to Joy, there was never really a question of what would sit at its heart.

Lily of the valley became our crest,  a symbol woven into our logo, not just for its beauty, but for everything it represents. Seasonality, sentiment, and a kind of quiet elegance that doesn’t seek attention, but holds it nonetheless.

It’s a reflection of how we approach our work:thoughtful, restrained, and always rooted in something deeper than the surface.

Fleeting, and All the More Beautiful for It

Part of what makes lily of the valley so special is its brevity. Its season is short, and it cannot be rushed.

We welcome it each year as it arrives, and let it go just as gently.

In the studio, we tend to use it with a light hand,  a few stems gathered simply, or woven delicately into bridal work. It doesn’t need much. In fact, it’s at its most beautiful when allowed space.

A Quiet Celebration

Each spring, when lily of the valley returns, it feels like a small homecoming. A reminder of where it all began, and of the kind of beauty we continue to be drawn to,  natural, fleeting, and full of feeling.

If you find yourself in Stamford while it’s in season, we’d love to share it with you.

A small stem, with so much meaning.
