Why Choose a Handmade Christmas Wreath?
Updated: 2 days ago
There is something about a wreath on the front door that signals the arrival of Christmas. Perhaps it's the scent of fresh foliage as you come home, or the familiar ritual of hanging one each December. A simple gesture, but one that has become part of how we welcome the festive season.
At Ode to Joy, our Stamford studio becomes a rather different place in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The workbenches fill with winter greenery, ribbons are unravelled, and wreaths in various stages of completion occupy almost every available surface.
It's one of the busiest times of our year, and one of our favourites.

A Tradition with a Story
Long before wreaths became a familiar sight on our front doors, evergreen branches were used to decorate homes during winter. Their ability to remain green through the coldest months made them symbols of life, hope and renewal.
The circular shape of the wreath, with no beginning or end, has also come to represent continuity and the passing of the seasons.
Over time, these traditions became part of Christmas celebrations, evolving into the decorative wreaths we recognise today.
We love that something so familiar carries such a long history. Each December, we're taking part in a tradition that has been reimagined by generations before us.
The Ingredients Make All the Difference
For us, the beauty of a handmade Christmas wreath begins with the materials.
We work with an abundance of fresh winter foliage, selecting different varieties for their colour, scent, texture and natural movement. Fir and pine bring that unmistakable fragrance of Christmas, while eucalyptus, and other evergreens introduce contrasting shapes and shades of green.
Then come the more interesting ingredients. Clusters of berries, hydrangea, heather, dried fruit and carefully chosen seasonal details, layered amongst the foliage to give each wreath its character.
Our luxury Christmas wreaths are finished with carefully selected ribbons and decorative details, chosen to complement the natural ingredients rather than compete with them.
The result is something generous, full of texture and entirely individual.
From Our Workbench to Your Front Door
Every Ode to Joy Christmas wreath is made by hand in our Stamford studio.
Starting with the moss base, our florists gradually build up layers of fresh foliage, considering the shape, balance and movement as they work. Decorative ingredients are then added, followed by the grande velvet bow that finishes it all off.
There is no identical formula for every wreath. The materials naturally behave differently, and part of the skill is knowing when to follow their movement rather than force them into place.
That is what we love about handmade work. Each wreath carries the character of its ingredients and the hands that created it.

Come and Make One Yourself
Of course, part of the pleasure of wreath making is experiencing the process firsthand.
Our Christmas wreath workshops have become a much-loved seasonal tradition. Guests spend a few hours surrounded by fresh winter foliage, luxury materials and beautiful ribbons, learning the techniques behind creating their own statement wreath.
It's a chance to step away from the usual rush, enjoy the atmosphere of the studio and leave with something made entirely by you.
We also offer private Christmas wreath workshops and festive team-building experiences, whether you're gathering friends for a seasonal celebration or planning something a little different with colleagues.
Our workshops can also take place beyond the studio, including special settings such as Woolfox, bringing the experience of Flower School to a different environment.
There's something particularly enjoyable about a group of people working with the same ingredients and seeing how completely different their finished wreaths become.
Christmas Wreaths for Businesses
Wreaths aren't only for the front door at home.
We also create bespoke Christmas wreaths for businesses, from independent shops and restaurants to offices and hospitality spaces.
Whether it's a generous statement wreath to welcome customers or something designed to complement an existing festive display, we consider the building, its surroundings and the atmosphere you want to create.
A thoughtfully designed wreath can be a beautiful first impression, setting the tone before anyone has even stepped inside.
A Christmas Tradition of Your Own

Whether you choose a handmade wreath from our collection, commission something bespoke or join us at Flower School to create your own, we hope it becomes a small part of your Christmas traditions.
Something to look forward to bringing out each December, or, in the case of a fresh wreath, the pleasure of choosing something new as the season begins.
Our handmade Christmas wreaths are available to pre-order online, and our festive workshops are now booking.
We look forward to welcoming Christmas with you.
With love,
Ode to Joy x
